ABSTRACT
Underwater acoustic signals received on an antenna are influenced by random oceanic
fluctuations. The aim of this study is to characterize this influence by means of determining signal
moments, intensity, and vertical coherence of the sound field.
Ito's formalism is used in [1] to generalize the derivation of parabolic equations for
all the moments of the sound field under assumption of white gaussian noise for the index of refraction.
Ito's formalism is well adapted for relaxing the hypotheses of gaussian white noise; application of the
Papanicolaou-Kohler theorem allows one to extend the validity of the numerical results to less
restrictive hypotheses on the medium fluctuations for various estimated ranges of propagation. |

ABSTRACT
It has been shown [C NOEL Propagation
Aix-Marseille
II.] that sound speed fluctuations due to internal waves may significantly affect sound propagation in
the ocean. In recent oceanographic publications, models of such fluctuations usually rely on statistical
parameters as quadratic mean, power spectrum, orders of magnitude, correlation length and time. We
underline in a first way the reality of these hypotheses from in-situ measurements of celerity realized
in Mediterranean sea in 1990. Then we use such characteristics to build a generator of sequences of
fluctuating celerity profiles, which are used as inputs in our sound propagation code based on a
Monte-Carlo technique.
We
have checked the adequacy of these hypotheses from in-situ coupled oceanographic-acoustic measurements
obtained in the Norway sea in 1985. The procedure is the following: we first extract from the celerity
measurements their statistical characteristics and generate artificial celerity profiles to compute
acoustic pressure as stated above. Then we compare the numerical results with the measured pressure.
The results are
found to be in good agreement. The in-situ celerity profiles can thus be considered as one realization
of the modeled random process, as far as sound propagation is concerned. This validates our assumptions
on medium fluctuations. |

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to
theoretically evaluate the performances of such an array in a fluctuating medium by means of arrival
time-angle diagrams.
First, suitability of using the eikonal approximation to monitor the sound speed
structure in a fluctuating ocean and especially to probe meso-structure in the North-East Atlantic Ocean
is discussed. Then, a study of the evolution of tomographic parameters: travel time, temporal spreading,
temporal resolution, angular density, based on ray theory is conducted through a synthesis of recent
theoretical and experimental studies. Its aim is to quantify and precisely define the undesirable
effects induced by the fluctuating medium. These results will be compared with those of a statistical
study, and then efficiency of an array processing dealing with a joint assessment of arrival angles and
times will be investigated. Finally some general features of the feasibility of this improvement are
pointed out from these first parametric results and some particular conclusions are given in the case of
the North-East Atlantic ocean. |

An
acoustic tomography experiment, supported by European MAST contracts, has been carried out in the all
occidental Mediterranean sea. During 10 months in 1994, acoustic phase shift keying signals have been
emitted at a pulse rate of 1 per 4 hours and received by seven sources- receivers localized in the all
basin and spaced by several hundred kilometers.
In
addition, signals from two of these sources localized near Corse and Sardinia were received on a
vertical array moored at 800m depth near Nice. So, it means a joint assessment of arrival angles and
times of acoustic signals and a useful improvement in general problem of identification of acoustic
paths.
Signals received on 16
hydrophones of this 40 meters long array were recorded and processed to extract propagation time and
arrival angle of each ray path. This paper reports the results of the analysis of these last data
records and discuss observation of wave fronts at each hydrophone depth, tractability and study of
arrival times as a function of time and angle. |

ABSTRACT
In order to adjust sonar
equation to transient signals, we study the effect of underwater acoustic propagation on that kind of
unstationnary signals. In particular the problem is to characterize distortions induced on received
signal by multiple paths: temporal spread, attenuation, morphing.
To study distortion due to
propagation it is first necessary to modelize ocean medium as a linear filter characterized by its
impulse response well adapted to the case of transient signals.
A propagation model is used to
determine transfer function of the medium. Because transient signals present a large spectrum from high
frequencies to low ones, a ray program tracing is used and this model has been first improved to be able
to take into account low frequencies with corrections in caustics area.
The propagated signal is then
obtained by a convolution product between the source signal and the impulse response.
This developed tool is used to
conduct a study of the impact of the ocean medium on the impulse response. This parametric study is
realized over a set of typical operational configurations and families of measured transient signals.
Width and level of this impulse response which appeared to be interesting criteria to describe
distortion are studied in addition to the coherence between propagated and emitted signal.
The synthetized results are taken into account in the transient sonar equation giving
more precise information on the detectability of transient noises. |

ABSTRACT
The
effects of atmospheric turbulence on electromagnetic wave propagation can
be simulated by adding appropriate random fluctuations to the mean
deterministic refractive index profile. The aim of the study is to
characterize the moments of the system response. In a standard approach,
the mean electromagnetic field can be obtained via a Monte Carlo method
and a random profile generator. [1, 2] This method is known to permit an
accurate description of the turbulent process, but on the other side
requires many indenpendant simulations.
In
this work, starting with a parabolic electromagnetic propagation model, we
derive a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE). From this SPDE,
using stochastic calculus rules, and more precisely Ito formalism, we can
derive directly the (deterministic) partial differential equations of ALL
the moments. [3]
The
mean electromagnetic field (first moment) is then proved to be the
solution of a modified parabolic equation (MPE) very closely related to
the initial PE. A slight modification in the existing code CORAFIN thus
allows a direct computation of the first moment of the system response. In
opposition with the Monte Carlo method which requires moreover than a
hundred tries, a single a
computation is sufficient here, In vacuum, the results appear to be in
very good agreement with those obtained by Tatarsky using an other
formalism.
The
mathematical assumptions on the random process representing the turbulence
are exposed and analysed with care. We show that a realistic turbulent
medium description, using Kolmogorov theory results and accurate structure
constant models is possible. The obtained mean electromagnetic field
coverage is then compared with the Monte Carlo method results. This
comparaison shows also a good agreement between the two approaches.
Partial
differential equations for the second and following moments can also be
derived, but their complexity is increasing and specific codes are to be
constructed for their numerical treatment. At last an extension of the
method to more sophisticated 2D turbulence spectra is under development.

ABSTRACT
The experimentation EVA (Summer 96) provided the GESMA with transmitted acoustic
data and environmental measurements (XBT, SBE probe, meteorology) in shallow water area in the vicinity
of the Atlantic continental slope. The objective of this paper is to examine how to assess a reasonable
estimate of acoustic variability in relation with environmental variability. The fluctuations of
acoustic signals received on a vertical array over the range 750-1200 Hz are the main interest of the
study. The data processing is divided in two parallel studies: the elaboration of a statistical model of
the medium, prelude to numerical simulations of the impulse response and the analysis of experimental
impulse response (main peak level and delay). |

ABSTRACT
ALHAMBRA a new measurement
system of a submarine radiated noise uses an antenna towed by another submarine or surface ship. Trajectography
system is then needed to determine the position of submarines for both navigation and measurement
functions. The high performance processing principle used requires a high positioning accuracy.
This paper deals with the
different steps constituting the ALHAMBRA's operational trajectography system. We first recall the
constraints of the distance measuring system : signals, correlation processing, recurrence, acoustic
contamination of main measurements, range, accuracy, effect of multiple paths
Distance measuring system
provides 8 distances between 8 antenna hydrophones and the measured submarine. Equations of this
surdetermined positioning problem in the mean least square formulation leads to a non linear system
which can be put into a linear form by a variable transformation.
A high false alarm rate occurs
in the case of a low signal to noise ratio which is not acceptable for array beam control. To improve
this situation an iterative regression process has been developed : the coherence between the 8 measured
distances is checked, if coherence is insufficient, iterative elimination of the distance is done. If
less than 4 distances remain the measured point is discarded. Some results of the trajectography system
are presented and characterized, as well as technology points. Further on, some development is made to
compute mean speed, to predict time and speed at CPA, to take into account additional constraints such
as known submarine depths.
Simplicity of the developed method achieves robustness and reliability proved at

ABSTRACT
We
have previously developed a direct stochastic method to generate the
response statistics of the electromagnetic field in a random turbulent
medium [1][2]. We study in this work the extension of this approach to the
propagation over a randomly distributed surface.
First
of all, we recall the main steps of the method : the effects of
atmospheric turbulence on electromagnetic wave propagation are simulated
by adding appropriate random fluctuations to the main deterministic
refractive index profile. Introducing this random component in a standard
parabolic equation model, we derive a stochastic partial differential
equation (SPDE). From this SPDE, using stochastic calculus rules, and more
precisely Ito Formalism, we can derive directly the (deterministic)
partial differential equations of ALL the moments.
The
mean electromagnetic field (first moment) is then proved to be the
solution of a modified parabolic equation (MPE) very closely related to
the initial PE. A slight modification in any existing code thus allows a
direct computation of the first moment of the system response. Results are
compared with those derived from a Monte Carlo method and with the
analytical solution obtained by V.A. Tatarski using an other formalism,
and show very good agreements between each other.
Moreover,
this approach allows us to describe accurately turbulence index
fluctuations along the vertical coordinate, particularly through the
structure constant Cn2(z) of the turbulence
process. We thus use this model in real data analysis, obtained during a
RCS measurement campaign during which both meteorological and
electromagnetic measures were made simultaneously. Pressure, temperature
and humidity measurements, from an instrumented buoy, allow us to compute Cn2(z)
profile in the lower atmospheric surface layer, using the accurate PIRAM
model (developed by the CELAR). Moreover, the mean refractive profile is
given either by radiosonde data, or by the meteorological mesoscale Meso-NH
model outputs, developed by Meteo France : we can thus compare the
different model results directly with electromagnetic data obtained by the
experimental radar on a calibrated sphere.

ABSTRACT : Sonar
or radar propagation : a unified approach.
Partial differential
equations models describing sonar or radar propagation in realistic
environments are presented here : variations of large scale
characteristics of the propagation medium are considered as well as fine
scale perturbations due to internal waves (ocean) or turbulence (atmosphere).
After a
brief presentation of both problems (sonar and radar) we focus on their
similarity. We show that, in many realistic environmental cases, it is
possible to reduce Maxwell system, which accounts for radar propagation,
to a scalar equation generalizing the Helmholtz equation of underwater
acoustics. Both cases can thus be treated in the same way. Next, five main
common features between horizontal sonar propagation and horizontal low
stratosphere radar propagation problems are drawn. They allow, by
simplification of the basic models, to obtain the so called «parabolic
models» and to construct, on this new basis, much more efficient
propagation softwares. The example of
a three dimensional wedge-shaped wave guide, in underwater
acoustics propagation, is then presented, with no cylindrical symmetry. We
chose to ignore here, the many theoretical and numerical difficulties we
had to overcome to build the fully three-dimensional solver TRIPARADIM we
use. As expected, pronounced horizontal refraction effects are shown, that
cannot be taken into account by two-dimensional standard models. The
effects of fine scale perturbations of the medium are then studied. We
show that internal waves for sonar propagation and turbulence for radar
propagation are dominant characteristics among fine scale variations. We
observe too that modeling of internal waves in the first case, or of
turbulence in the second case, are in deep connection, and in particular
that both perturbations can be introduced as noises in the models, leading
to similar stochastic partial differential equations . These noises
are simulated by constructing fluctuation generators based on realistic
internal waves or turbulence spectra. We then build, directly from the
stochastic models, the momentum equations. As far as mean (first moment)
is concerned, its equation appears to be closely related to the standard
unperturbed equation, and modification of the numerical solver is then
straightforward. We thus need only one calculation to achieve the type of
result that would have taken 150 by a Monte-Carlo statistical approach.
Numerical examples are presented, both for sonar and radar, showing, as
predicted by experiments, non negligible influence of fine scales
perturbations of propagation. We conclude with general considerations
about mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of complex phenomena. |

ABSTRACT
This
paper presents the results of the analysis of mid range propagation (~200
km) in a range dependent environment. The propagation medium is
characterized by two deep sound channels. The range dependence enables
energy transfer between the channels and leads to a mismatch between real
data and ray predictions. To explain this mismatch, an analysis of hybrid
ray propagation is presented. This analysis is completed by the
interpretation in terms of chaos. This chaos is quantified in the
particular case of the Bay of Biscay environment. This paper puts forward
that mesoscale perturbations, as the Mediterranean outflow in the North
Atlantic, can drastically affect long range propagation. |

ABSTRACT
This paper describes the development of a
simulation tool to model underwater acoustic communication over
time-varying channels. Physical parameters characterize time varying
channels by integration of static parameters (kind and form of sea surface
or sea bed) and variable ones (celerity, receiver moves…). RAYSON
software is suitable for testing all configurations (provided rays
propagation is available) and is able to deal with time variant impulse
response. Performances of acoustic link could be then evaluated.
This tool is particularly useful to design acoustic link, especially in
defining
necessary powerful and frequency band, and to evaluate environment impact
on the transmission. |

On généralise,

ABSTRACT
Underwater
acoustic signals received on an antenna are influenced by random oceanic
fluctuations. The aim of this study is to characterise this influence by
means of determining signal moments, intensity, and vertical coherence of
the sound field.
Environmental
phenomena are reviewed in order to define and characterise the random data
considered in the following study. The most important effects are
generally handled by deterministic modelling. Fluctuations of sound speed
resulting from the effects of internal waves constitute prevailing
disturbing effects.
Itô's formalism
is used to generalize the derivation of parabolic equations for all the
moments of the sound field under the assumption of white gaussian noise
for the index of refraction. Itô's formalism is well adapted for relaxing
the hypotheses of gaussian white noise: application of the
Papanicolaou-Kohler theorem allows one to extend the validity of the
numerical results to less restrictive hypotheses on the medium
fluctuations for various estimated ranges of propagation.
These equations
are solved numerically, by finite differences, for the first moment, and
by modal expansion for the second moments that lead to the mean intensity,
the vertical mutual coherence, and by taking the spatial Fourier transform
of the vertical mutual coherence function, to the angular spectral density.
A third approach, based on the Monte-Carlo method, is used to obtain the
first two moments.
Numerical results
are presented and compared for these three approaches. They are in good
agreement and are the same order of magnitude as a number of experimental
cases.

Propagation
